Byron Murphy Scouting Report

What I Like:

Change of Direction

Byron Murphy shows an above average ability to rotate his hips and change direction to attack the ball.  Has excellent acceleration to get to ball quickly and make the tackle.

What I Dislike:

Block Shedding and Physical Play

Murphy struggles to get free of blocks and make a play on the ball. He must show more consistent physical play to succeed at the next level.  Could struggle against bigger wide receivers.

Quick Reads

Murphy shows an above average ability to make a read on the ball and attack the ball carrier.  Once he makes the read, Murphy has an average ability to put himself in the right position.

Overall Breakdown

Byron Murphy is a hard-hitting cornerback that displays excellent technique as a shutdown corner. He has an above average ability to rotate his hips and quickly change direction to make a play on the ball. Could struggle against above average blocking receivers. Murphy has an above average ability to make quick reads and key the ball on screens.

Draft Round Prediction

Mid-First to Second-Round

I have Byron Murphy second on my big board, just behind LSU’s Greedy Williams. The NFL Combine is going to be huge for him to show-off his mechanics and technique. Look for teams in the latter half of the first round, with secondary needs, to take a look at Murphy.
