Last year, we saw EDGE rushers Travon Walker, Aidan Hutchinson, and Kayvon Thibodeaux dominate the draft-cycle. We could potentially see more of the same in 2023 with Alabama’s Will Anderson Jr and Clemson’s Myles Murphy at the top of many big boards. In this 2023 NFL Draft scouting report, we’ll breakdown Myles Murphy, as well as look at a 40 time, full scouting report, and predict his NFL Draft stock.

Myles Murphy 40 Time
I have Clemson EDGE Myles Murphy poised for a 4.68 40 time at the 2023 NFL Combine. If this holds true, it would be about a tenth and a half quicker than the league average for the defensive end position. On game film, Murphy displays solid athleticism when pass rushing off the edge. However, I would like to see the same explosiveness when running upfield or attacking the run outside.
Myles Murphy Injury History
Myles Murphy has played in every game during his three year stint at Clemson. In fact, while the Tigers had been bit by the injury bug at times, the program was able to utilize Myles Murphy, and his versatility, to build a solid front seven on defense.
Myles Murphy Scouting Report
Pros
- Successful Defensive Lineman In Goal Line Situations
- Possesses Good Use Of Hands Off The Edge
- Remains Upright Through Contact In The Trenches
Cons
- Needs To Improve Ability To Read And Diagnose Runs At Point Of Attack
- Small Tackle Range For A Defensive End
- Must Get More Creative To Beat Offensive Linemen In The NFL
Clemson EDGE Myles Murphy is a three-year contributor for the Clemson Tigers. Murphy has solidified himself as one of the top edge rushers in the 2023 NFL Draft class. He has good height and solid weight for the defensive end position in the NFL. His predicted 40 time of 4.68 seconds is slightly quicker than the league average.
Displays good body lean to beat aggressive use of hands from offensive tackles. Maintains a low pad level in goal line situations to create drive forward and restrict running lanes at the point of attack. Takes good angles towards the ball to leverage the ball carrier towards the sidelines. Possesses a good ability to bat down the offensive linemen’s hands to shed blocks off the edge. Shows a good ability to remain upright throughout contact in the trenches.
Has an adequate ability to read and diagnose runs quickly at the point of attack. Displays an adequate tackle range to bring down ball carriers. Struggles with agility when navigating through traffic upfield. I’d like to see him play with the same motor upfield as he does when rushing off the edge. Murphy would be a much more successful edge rusher if he was more creative with pass rush moves.
Myles Murphy NFL Draft Projection
In my opinion, Clemson’s Myles Murphy is the second-best EDGE rusher in this class, just behind Alabama’s Will Anderson Jr. Despite the ranking, I still have a top ten grade on Murphy for the 2023 NFL Draft.
Potential fits for Myles Murphy, if he does declare for the 2023 NFL Draft, include the Las Vegas Raiders, Seattle Seahawks, and Carolina Panthers. However, if his stock falls at all, he could catch the eye of the Indianapolis Colts or Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
