Are the Giants Serious About Justin Herbert?

Could a team draft a quarterback in the first round two years in a row? Apparently, the New York Giants might be taking a look at Justin Herbert.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported Monday that Giants head coach Joe Judge has had FaceTime conversations with Herbert.

It’s a bit of a surprise to many that they are even looking at a quarterback since they drafted Daniel Jones last April. Quarterback is not a desperate need for the team since they signed Colt McCoy to be the backup.

Why are the Giants Talking to Him?

A lot of teams who are in the top five in the draft like to speak to all prospects to cover their bases. The draft has at least three quarterbacks that could be taken in the top ten. It would be hard for most teams to not at least take a look. The Giants seem to feel the same way.

Daniel Jones did have an overachieving rookie season breaking several franchise rookie records. It appears that so far he could be their guy to lead the franchise in the future. He’s playing well and seems to have the confidence of his teammates.

Herbert at one point was considered the number one quarterback in the draft going into last season. He shows all the pedigree to being a starting quarterback in the NFL. Herbert has great field presence and has a rocket arm. The argument can be made for both quarterbacks.

Will the Giants Pick Justin Herbert?

It would be an overwhelming surprise since the team has other needs. The offensive line needs to be restructured to protect Jones’ blindside. Defense could use some support in all three levels of the defense. There are needs everywhere on the team except for quarterback and running back.

Most mock drafts have New York picking the former Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs. It’s the pick that makes the most sense for the team to help build around Jones and Saquon Barkley. Drafting Wirfs would be a good first step in rebuilding a young offense.

Drafting Herbert would open up a whole can of worms that Judge would have to deal with in his early head coaching career. The New York media would hammer Judge each day about creating a quarterback controversy. On one hand, Judge could pick his guy to build around with Herbert. But on the other hand, Jones should be given a chance to be the guy since he’s only had one year.

It shouldn’t be a serious conversation, but it worth at least talking about. This makes for a fun conversation among media members and fans alike.
