2024 NFL Draft: Johnny Wilson Draft Profile and Scouting Report

Johnny Wilson joined the Florida State Seminoles for the 2022 season after a transfer from Arizona State, where he spent two years in their program. With his height, he’s one of the tallest wide receivers in college football, and will become one of the tallest in the NFL. The upside for him is massive with a second season under head coach Mike Norvell.

Johnny Wilson 40 Time

Projected 40 Time: 4.57 seconds

Johnny Wilson is entering his second year as a contributor at wide receiver for the Florida State Seminoles. Prior to his time with the Seminoles, Wilson was a member of the Arizona State Sun Devils. Given his size, Johnny Wilson is primarily used as an outside receiver, although some of his routes are generated from the slot position. He possesses elite height and solid weight for the position. Our projected 40 time of 4.57 seconds is about a tenth slower than the league average, but very good when factoring in his tall frame.

Wilson possesses very good quickness off the line of scrimmage, which he uses to push the defender back and open up space at the top of the route. Has a good ability to track balls on intermediate and deep routes, as well as those outside the numbers. His catch radius is good as he’s able to snatch balls that are placed well away form his body. Shows a good contact balance to remain upright in traffic after the catch is made. Displays a good aggressiveness to attack defenders as a blocker downfield and out in space.

However, I would like to see him be more aggressive throughout the stem of the route to fight through pressure. His acceleration downfield is adequate as he is unable to separate from some defenders. When running routes, some of them can be rounded off. Furthermore, he doesn’t possess the ability to run a full route tree, unlike others in the class. Needs to show improvement as a blocker, too. There are times where he is unable to maintain leverage throughout the rep to create space in the open-field for the ball carrier.

Recruiting Bio

Johnny Wilson graduated from Calabasas High School in Calabasas, California. He was a four-star recruiting prospect, according to ESPN and 247Sports, and scored a 90.28 in On3’s Industry Ranking.

Johnny Wilson’s first commitment was to the University of Oregon in July of 2019. However, several months later, he decommitted from Oregon and signed his letter of intent to enroll at Arizona State. Following two seasons with the Sun Devils, Wilson entered the transfer portal. A few days later, Wilson announced that he would transfer and join the Florida State Seminoles.

He’s estimated to be worth $567,000 in NIL value.
