2024 NFL Draft: Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa Draft Profile and Scouting Report

The famous younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Taulia has traits and tools that are intriguing to an NFL quarterback and looks more the part of a suitable backup quarterback in the NFL. He’s smaller than his brother, which isn’t comforting to NFL teams, but has been productive as a three-season starter at Maryland and has shown growth/improvement over his time there.

Taulia Tagovailoa 40 Time

Projected 40 Time: 4.69 seconds

The positives are good for Taulia Tagovailoa, as he has good arm strength and can push the ball effectively over 50 yards downfield. He’s got good accuracy and typically throws with good placement, and can position in the pocket well while moving to avoid outside edge pressure. Tagovailoa is a good athlete and throws well outside of the pocket and is a very effective scrambler.

The real problem is that while Tagovailoa has good arm strength and is very effective, he doesn’t control it well and typically has to drive the football to get the ball out of his release. His size is not ideal, under 5’11” and listed at 200 pounds, and his hand size will be a problem with teams. His footwork is not consistent which forces him to throw off platform at times that he doesn’t need to and miss throws.

Recruiting Bio

Taulia Tagovailoa was a unanimous 4-star prospect coming out of Thompson High School in Alabaster, Alabama. He received a 91.89 grade on On3’s Industry Rankings and held offers from LSU, Michigan, Oregon, Florida, Tennessee, Ole Miss, and Utah among others.

Tagovailoa participated in Nike’s “The Opening” 2018 Finals in Frisco, Texas and was selected to play in the Polynesian Bowl in Hawaii while also being named by the Bowl as the 2018 High School Player of the Year. He earned a spot in the 2019 All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. Tagovailoa threw for 3,728 yards and 35 touchdowns as a senior at Thompson while becoming the only quarterback in Alabama state history to have at least four 400-yard passing performances in his career.

Tagovailoa is valued at $411k in NIL, including deals with Jersey Mike’s, Candy Digital, and Muscle Milk. He’s ranked as the 102nd highest-valued college football player.
