Jeremiah Trotter Jr burst onto the scene in 2022, following limited-appearances during the 2021 season. Played just 59 snaps in 2021, but was able to tally 15 total tackles and one sack. 2022 was a breakout year for him, racking up 89 total tackles, including 13.5 for a loss, 6.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble, as well.

Texas A&M’s Edgerrin cooper joined the aggies as a member of the 2020 recruiting class. As a freshman, he played in all 10 games, although he finished the season with just 2 tackles. Cooper took on a larger role with the defense in 2021, ranking fourth on the team with 58 total tackles, along with 1 interception. Edgerrin Cooper made 8 starts for the Aggies through 11 appearances, where he finished with 61 total tackles, which included 8 tackles for a loss. His best season came in 2023 as a redshirt junior, where he finished with 84 total tackles, which included 17 tackles for a loss and 8 sacks. For his play in 2023, he earned first and second-team All-American honors.

Joining the Tar Heels as an early enrollee in the 2020 class, Cedric Gray made an impact immediately as he played in all 12 games as a true freshman. The following season, he started 11 of 13 games that year, finishing with 99 total tackles and 2 interceptions. He earned first-team All-ACC and second-team All-American honors in 2022, where he ended up with 145 total tackles, including 12 tackles for a loss and 2 interceptions. A similar season as a senior in 2023 earned him an invitation to play in the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Marist Liufau joined the University of Notre Dame as a member of the 2019 recruiting class. As a freshman, he appeared in four games for the Irish, but did not record any statistics. The next season, as a sophomore, Liufau finished the season with 22 total tackles. Marist Liufau suffered a broken ankle before the start of the 2021 season, an injury that kept him out for the whole year. Over the next two seasons, Liufau tallied 95 total tackles, including 10.5 for a loss and 3.5 sacks. Further, he was a 2023 Butkus Award Semifinalist.

In high school, Payton Wilson suffered a knee injury, but was a commit of NC State in the 2018 class. He suffered a second knee injury during the summer of 2018, which caused him to miss the season. In 2019, Wilson only made one start for the Wolfpack, but led the team in tackles. He improved dramatically in 2020 as he finished the season with 108 total tackles, which included 11.5 tackles for a loss and 3.5 sacks, along with 2 interceptions. Missed 2021 spring workouts due to surgery on both shoulders, then he suffered a season-ending shoulder surgery in the 2nd game of the season. He missed a game in 2022, but has remained healthy ever since. Regardless, medicals and durability remain a concern.

Tommy Eichenberg first saw significant playing time in 2021, having only played in five games the previous two seasons. Recorded 77 solo tackles in 2022, which are the second-most over the last 20 years (Ryan Shazier – 101 in ’13). His brother, Liam Eichenberg, is a starting offensive tackle in the NFL.

He started in 4 of the 13 games that he played in for the Gators in 2021, finishing up the year with 62 total tackles, including 8 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Following the season, Hopper entered the transfer portal and found his way to Missouri. Ford appeared in all 11 games for the Longhorns in 2021, making two starts as well. He finished with 53 total tackles, which included 6 tackles for a loss. The 2022 and 2023 seasons have been breakouts for Jaylan Ford, putting up over 100 total tackles each season, along with 4 interceptions in 2022.

However, over the next four seasons, Nathaniel Watson would not only become one of the more impactful defenders on the Bulldogs, but in the SEC, too.
