Saturday night, Jackson State secured the victory against MEAC rival South Carolina State. Graduate transfer quarterback Jason Brown had one of his best games in his collegiate career. He led the Tigers to a 37-7 win, possibly boosting his NFL Draft stock. Brown started his career at Saint Francis University and made a name for himself alongside current New York Jets Tight End EJ Jenkins. Brown was set to lead the Red Flash to be legitimate FCS playoff contenders in the 2020 season until it was canceled and moved to the spring due to COVID-19.
Before he committed to Saint Francis, Brown was a three-star recruit who had interest from many power-five programs but only one offer from SFU. He was named conference player of the year as a senior and led his team to a 9-3 record. Additionally, he broke the record for most touchdowns in a season and most touchdowns in a game at Chancellor High School. He helped Chancellor win back-to-back conference titles in his time at the school as well.
Jason Brown Transfers To The Football Bowl Subdivision
The six-foot-two Fredericksburg, Virginia native then decided he would not play in the FCS spring season and opted to transfer from Saint Francis. After officially entering the transfer portal on January 8th, 2021 it only took him eighteen days to find a new home. That home was with Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks. He was joined by his number-one receiver at Saint Francis, EJ Jenkins. Brown looked to become the starter for the Gamecocks before Coach Beamer announced that graduate assistant Zeb Noland would start. The Junior at the time did not get to see the field until the game against Texas A&M where South Carolina lost 44-14. He finished out his season leading the Gamecocks to a 2-2 record in his four games starting.
Brown after the season would end up transferring to Virginia Tech hoping to find his way onto the field. Marshall transfer Grant Wells decided to transfer to Virginia Tech as well, so that led to another quarterback battle that Jason needed to win to get onto the field. Wells ended up being named the Hokies starting quarterback, which resulted in Brown only seeing three games’ worth of action.
Jason Brown Hopes To Boost NFL Draft Stock With A New Home In The FCS
The two-time transfer decided to hit the portal once again. This time, he chose TC Taylor and the Jackson State Tigers to help rejuvenate his career. As mentioned earlier, the game was broadcast nationally on ABC. Brown went 26-33(78.8% comp pct) with 361 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the Tigers to a 37-7 victory. Furthermore, this gave new head coach TC Taylor his first win as Jackson State’s coach. At one point in the game, he completed twenty straight passes which resulted in two touchdown passes and zero turnovers.
Jason Brown wasn’t able to see the field at Virginia Tech. However, with his new home, he’s able to showcase his talent as the lead man at Jackson State. All he needed was a chance to showcase his talent, which he has at Jackson State. Brown and the Tigers are a force to be reckoned with going into a huge conference matchup on ESPN next Sunday against Florida A&M, in a game that has decided the SWAC east division champion the last couple of seasons.
Can Brown and the Jackson State Tigers pull off the upset next weekend? If so, they’ll go to a third straight Celebration Bowl. I guess we will find out next Sunday.
